UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The following instructions are for configuring Virtual Iron Single Server to run SCInterface using a pre-defined SCInterface UI, SCM and SC Virtual Iron Logical Disk and a SCInterface SC Virtual Iron Logical Disk. This is ideal for setting up a virtual environment with many different virtualized deployments of SCInterface.

[edit] Prerequisites

[edit] Configuring Virtual Iron

For our setup, we used Virtual Iron Single Server v3.7.4. These instructions will assume that is the same (or similar environment) that you have installed.

  1. Open your favorite web browser and navigate to the IP Address of your Virtual Iron system.
  2. If you have not already done so, login to the Administration Manager and enter in your license key. This can be requested from http://www.virtualiron.com again at any time for the Single Server Edition and is freely available.
    1. Please contact Virtual Iron for support if you need assistance with your registration key at http://www.virtualiron.com.
  3. From within the web browser, launch the Virtualization Manager.
  4. When the Virtualization Manager loads, navigate under Resource Center -> Virtual Data Center -> Your Server Name (where Your Server Name is likely the same name as the motherboard that Virtual Iron is running), right click on the Your Server Name and click Rename.
  5. Rename the server name to SCInterface 1 and press ENTER.

[edit] Setup the SCM Virtual Machine

The following instructions are for configuring an SCM with the UI and an SC already installed within a CentOS operating system. We will call this virtual server SCInterface SCM 1.

[edit] Configure the SCM 1's Logical Disk

  1. Locate the recently downloaded SCInterface UI, SCM and SC Virtual Iron Logical Disk on your system.

[edit] Create the SCM 1 Virtual Machine

  1. Within Resource Center -> Virtual Data Center, right click on SCInterface 1 and click New Virtual Server.
  2. Under SCInterface 1, right click on the newly created New Virtual Server and click Rename.
  3. Rename this virtual server to SCInterface SCM 1.
  4. Left click once on SCInterface SCM 1.
  5. In the right-hand pane, click on the Configuration tab.
  6. On the right side, within the Network Adapters section of the Configuration tab, click the Edit... button. A Network Adapter Configuration window will appear.
  7. Within the Network Adapter Configuration window, click the Add button on the right.
  8. A new VNIC should appear with the red text [Unassigned](click to edit) under the Ethernet Network column will appear. Click on this text once and select vi_public.
  9. Within the Network Adapter Configuration window, click the OK button.
  10. You should not return to the Configuration' tab. Within the Configuration tab's Configuration & Boot Options section, click the Edit... button.
  11. The Virtual Server Options Configuration window should appear. Make sure the following are set:
    1. At least 1 processor (2 is better).
    2. At least 512MB of memory (1GB is best).
    3. Remove the check mark next to Use CD-ROM/DVD. We do not need the CD-ROM/DVD if there is one available on this system.
    4. Priority of 5.
    5. Do not place a check mark next to VS Tools installed. Leave this empty.
      1. If you select this, Virtual Iron will prompt you to ensure that the OS and VS Tools is already installed.
    6. Operating System is Other Linux.
    7. Select Disk -> Device as Logical Disk SCM 1
  12. Within the Virtual Server Options Configuration window, click OK.
  13. At the bottom right-hand corner, click Commit. Wait a few seconds for all of these changes to be applied.

[edit] Setup the SC Virtual Machine

  1. Right click on SCInterface 1 and click New Virtual Server.
  2. Under SCInterface 1, right click on the newly created New Virtual Server and click Rename.
  3. Rename this virtual server to SCInterface SC 1 (notice is this is the SC not the SCM).
  4. At the bottom right-hand corner, click Commit. Wait a few seconds for all of these changes to be applied.
  5. Install the SCInterface UI, SCM and SC Virtual Iron Logical Disk.
  6. ...

[edit] Configuring the SCInterface SCM

The SCInterface SCM 1 instance is the UI, SCM and SC for SCInterface installed within CentOS 4.5. The following instructions should be followed to get your SCM up and running.

  3. At the bottom right, click Committ.
  4. Right click on the SCInterface SCM 1 virtual machine and click Launch Console.
  5. The console should appear with the CentOS kernel launching. If the SCInterface SCM 1 virtual machine started correctly, you should see CentOS release 4.5 (Final) with SCInterface v2.0 Full Install and a login prompt at the top of the screen.
  6. Login as root with a password of scinterface
  7. At the shell prompt type: passwd root
  8. Follow the instructions on the screen to reset your root password to something that you will remember. WARNING: Once this is set, there is no way to get back into your SCInterface SCM 1 virtual machine if you forget this password.
